Prufrock, musically speaking, is an expansion on the Prologue motif - written around the same time (1993). The words came much, much later - 2020 - inspired by the T.S. Eliot poem "The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock". It explores the desire of a middle-aged man to who wants to go out and experience life, but is held back by his anxieties. He takes solace in the knowledge that there is a time for everything ... a time to hide, a time to shine.
lyrics
Calculate my smile and practice my stance,
and hold ... two ... three.
I feel out of place,
so alien in my skin.
But I know will come a time,
a time to break, and to create
a time to love, a time to hate,
a time to shine, a time to hide.
Rehearsed my lines to death.
No plan 'B'.
I am sticking to the script.
It's easier this way,
to simply say nothing.
But I know will come a time,
a time to break, and to create
a time to love, a time to hate,
a time to hide, a time to shine.
